Designing Open Spaces
People don’t think much about floors, unless they’re horribly ugly or uncomfortable. But support is important, as is durability and strength. Floors carry the brunt of our work and activity. At Minted, the huge open plan meant the floors were a giant percentage of Minted’s visual space. We wanted to use this real estate carefully, combining design with comfort.
To do this we salvaged reclaimed scaffolding beams treated and set in an energetic herringbone pattern. We loved the texture, color and cool, calm feeling that emanated from the whitewashed wood. We incorporated other natural surfaces wherever possible, including animal hides or woven grass mats to cover concrete or synthetic carpeting. These organic elements underfoot became the perfect balance for the high, industrial ceilings overhead.
